
Introduction
11 months ago, I wrote My Literary Art of Tok Pisin Legal Translation. That was my Translation Style Guide where I described the guidelines used in legal translation and the reasons behind it.
Today I am privileged to translate HR Policies amounting to 25, 429 words. This has given me an opportunity to develop another Translation Style Guide. Below is a snippet of my new Translation Style Guide for HR documents.
Translation Style Guides are part of instrumental competence that all translators must possess. Instrumental competence refers to the ability to use documentation resources and technological resources in translation.
PNG Language Services is committed to language development in PNG and is working to provide a Tok Pisin Translation Training aimed at establishing translation competence levels in written translation and provide direction for professional development. This training will be available soon.
Guide 1. Words and phrases to leave in English
1. Any Job Title and Policy Title
For instance; Health and Safety Officer
Example sentence; Yupela i mas tokim wanpela Health and Safety Officer.
(You must report it to a Health and Safety Officer.)
Rationale; Health and Safety Officer is a proper noun. Proper nouns should be left as is all throughout the translation unless the client requests their translation in Tok Pisin.
2. Any HR Lingo
For instance; Customer Due Diligence
Example sentence; Customer due diligence em wanem samting?
(What is customer due diligence?)
Rationale; To achieve readability and easy referencing. Customer due diligence is more readable and easily understood than ‘kastoma du dilijens’. Also, customer due diligence is referenced in English literature but not in Tok Pisin dictionaries or any other known written materials yet. Unless the client requests for their translation or transliteration, HR lingo will be left in English.
